Mission Statement
My art has evolved as a reaction to, rather than a record of, the world around me. I try to capture the essence, the energy, the character of a landscape, still life or personality instead of an exact rendition.
Painting is my way of responding to what I see and how I feel at a particular moment. The interrelationship of positive and negative shapes, tone and hue all combine until the painting takes over and "tells" me what it needs. When I look at my finished painting, I am instantly transported back to the sights, sounds, smells and feelings of the period during which it was conceived.
I prefer to work from life, although time does not always permit this with landscapes. A photograph may be used only as a starting point. The adventure is to paint until the excitement which made me record that image returns.
My painting is where I have been, where I am, and a glimpse of where I am going. It is both a question and a response.
